Artificial Intelligence (AI) Use Policy
Artificial Intelligence (AI) Use Policy
The Journal of Event, Travel and Tour Management (JETT) is committed to maintaining academic integrity, research transparency, confidentiality, and ethical scholarly publishing. This policy establishes the requirements governing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools by authors, editors, and peer reviewers throughout manuscript preparation, editorial management, and the publication process.
AI tools may support certain tasks when their use is appropriate and transparently disclosed. However, AI cannot replace human scholarly judgment, authorship accountability, independent peer review, or editorial decision-making.
1. General Principles
JETT applies the following principles to the use of AI in scholarly publishing:
-
Transparency: Relevant AI use must be disclosed in accordance with the responsibilities of authors and editors.
-
Human accountability: Individuals remain responsible for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and ethical compliance of their work and decisions.
-
Confidentiality: Manuscripts, unpublished research findings, reviewer reports, and confidential editorial information must be protected from unauthorized disclosure to AI applications.
-
Scholarly independence: AI must not replace critical thinking, scientific evaluation, independent peer review, or editorial judgment.
-
Responsible use: AI-generated content must be checked for accuracy, appropriate attribution, fabricated references, bias, and other potential errors.
2. Use of AI by Authors
Authors may use appropriate AI tools to assist with limited tasks during manuscript preparation, such as language editing, grammar correction, translation, and improving readability, provided that the use complies with applicable ethical, confidentiality, and research integrity requirements.
Authors must observe the following requirements:
-
Authors must disclose the use of AI tools when AI has made a substantive contribution to manuscript preparation, content generation, data analysis, interpretation, or other relevant research activities.
-
The disclosure must identify the AI tool used and explain its purpose and scope of use.
-
Authors must independently verify all AI-assisted content, including factual statements, citations, references, calculations, and interpretations.
-
Authors remain fully responsible for the originality, accuracy, integrity, and ethical compliance of the submitted manuscript.
-
AI-generated text, ideas, images, data, or other materials must not be presented in a misleading manner or used to fabricate research evidence, results, or references.
-
Authors must ensure that the use of AI does not violate confidentiality, privacy, intellectual property rights, research ethics, or applicable data protection requirements.
-
AI tools must not be listed as authors or co-authors because they cannot assume responsibility for the research or publication.
The use of AI for basic spelling or grammar correction that does not materially generate or alter scholarly content should be distinguished from substantive AI-assisted content generation. Authors should follow the journal's submission instructions regarding disclosure.
Author Disclosure Statement
When applicable, authors should include an AI disclosure statement in the manuscript, preferably in a section titled "Declaration of AI-Assisted Technologies" or another section specified by the journal.
Example:
"During the preparation of this manuscript, the authors used [name of AI tool] for [specific purpose]. The authors reviewed and verified the relevant output and take full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the final manuscript."
If no relevant AI tools were used, authors may provide the following statement:
"The authors declare that no AI tools were used in the preparation of this manuscript."
Authors must ensure that their declaration accurately reflects the actual use of AI in their research and writing process.
3. Use of AI by Editors
Editors are responsible for maintaining the integrity, confidentiality, independence, and fairness of the editorial process.
AI tools must not replace the editor's scholarly judgment, assessment of manuscript quality, evaluation of peer-review reports, or final editorial decision.
Editors who use AI tools for permitted editorial or administrative assistance must:
-
Disclose relevant AI use in accordance with the journal's internal editorial procedures and applicable disclosure requirements.
-
Independently verify AI-assisted outputs before relying on or communicating them.
-
Protect the confidentiality of manuscripts, author information, reviewer identities, review reports, and other unpublished editorial information.
-
Avoid entering or uploading confidential manuscript content or other protected editorial information into public or unauthorized AI applications.
-
Ensure that editorial decisions are based on scholarly merit, reviewer assessments, research integrity, and the journal's policies rather than AI-generated recommendations.
-
Remain fully accountable for editorial communications, recommendations, and decisions.
AI may assist with limited administrative tasks, such as organizing non-confidential information or improving routine communications, where permitted by the journal. It must not be used to delegate or automate substantive scholarly evaluation or editorial decision-making.
Where AI is used in a manner that materially contributes to an editorial assessment or communication, the editor must disclose the use through the journal's designated internal process and, where appropriate, to the relevant parties.
4. Prohibition of AI Use by Peer Reviewers
JETT prohibits peer reviewers from using AI tools in the peer-review process.
This prohibition applies to all stages of manuscript assessment and includes, but is not limited to:
-
Using AI to read, analyze, summarize, or interpret a submitted manuscript for review purposes.
-
Using AI to evaluate the originality, scientific validity, methodological quality, significance, or suitability of a manuscript.
-
Using AI to generate, draft, rewrite, translate, or formulate reviewer comments, recommendations, or reports.
-
Using AI to determine whether a manuscript should be accepted, revised, or rejected.
-
Uploading, pasting, sharing, or entering a complete manuscript, part of a manuscript, tables, figures, supplementary materials, or excerpts into any AI application for review-related purposes.
-
Using AI to identify alleged plagiarism, methodological deficiencies, research misconduct, or other concerns as part of the review assessment.
Peer reviewers must conduct their evaluations independently, using their own expertise, scholarly judgment, and critical analysis.
Reviewers must maintain the confidentiality of all submitted materials and must not disclose unpublished manuscript content to third-party AI services.
Reviewers who cannot complete an assessment without relying on prohibited AI assistance should decline the assignment or notify the editor so that an appropriate alternative arrangement can be made.
Violations of this policy may result in the review being discontinued, the reviewer being removed from the assignment, or other appropriate action under the journal's publication ethics procedures.
5. AI and Authorship
AI systems, chatbots, language models, and other AI applications cannot be listed as authors or co-authors of manuscripts submitted to JETT.
Authorship requires intellectual contribution, approval of the final manuscript, and accountability for the integrity of the work. AI systems cannot independently fulfill these responsibilities.
Authors must ensure that the author list accurately represents the contributions of eligible human authors. AI-assisted content does not remove the obligation to acknowledge relevant sources, verify information, and maintain research integrity.
6. AI in Research Data and Analysis
The use of AI in research design, data processing, statistical analysis, interpretation, image generation, or other research activities must be scientifically justified and appropriately disclosed when relevant.
Authors remain responsible for:
-
The validity and appropriateness of AI-assisted research methods.
-
The accuracy, authenticity, and integrity of the underlying data.
-
The reproducibility and transparent reporting of research procedures, where applicable.
-
Identifying relevant limitations, bias, and uncertainty associated with AI-assisted methods.
-
Ensuring compliance with research ethics, privacy, and data protection requirements.
AI-generated data or outputs must not be misrepresented as independently observed empirical evidence. Any AI-generated materials included in a manuscript must be appropriately described and must not mislead readers about how the research was conducted.
7. Verification and Research Integrity
AI tools may produce inaccurate statements, fabricated references, misleading interpretations, biased outputs, or content that resembles existing publications.
Authors and editors must independently verify relevant AI-assisted outputs before using them. Responsibility for any errors, misleading claims, inappropriate citations, or ethical violations remains with the individuals responsible for the manuscript or editorial action.
The use of AI does not excuse plagiarism, fabrication, falsification, copyright infringement, inappropriate authorship, or other forms of research and publication misconduct.
8. Disclosure, Compliance, and Editorial Action
JETT may request additional information regarding the use of AI at any stage of manuscript submission, peer review, editorial processing, or publication.
Failure to disclose relevant AI use, prohibited AI use during peer review, or the use of AI to misrepresent research may result in further editorial assessment.
Depending on the nature and seriousness of the concern, the journal may request clarification, require corrections, suspend editorial processing, reject a manuscript, discontinue a review assignment, or take other appropriate action in accordance with its publication ethics policies.
Concerns will be assessed fairly and proportionately, with due consideration for the available evidence and the integrity of the scholarly record.
9. Policy Review
The editorial team is responsible for reviewing this policy periodically to ensure that it remains consistent with developments in AI technology, research integrity, confidentiality requirements, and recognized publication ethics standards.
Any updates will be communicated through the official JETT journal website.
By submitting a manuscript to JETT, authors acknowledge their responsibility to comply with this AI Use Policy. Editors and peer reviewers are likewise expected to observe the requirements applicable to their respective roles.
